Business ‘n Schools Forum
The recent Business 'n Schools Forum was a wonderful opportunity for the Committee to highlight the corporate citizenship work undertaken by many of our Committee members. In particular, the valuable work in the education sector, targeted to help youth from disadvantaged communities.
Thank you to all our members who attended the Forum and to the Deloitte team, Pio Terei and the 40 strong performers from the Puutake Unit at James Cook High School who set the scene for a warm mixing of cultures and businesses across the public and private sector.
The Business 'n Schools programme continues to form part of the Committee for Auckland's work strategy to create talented people for Auckland City.
The Fletcher and Tangaroa College partnership was show-cased as an exemplar of the programme. Fletcher's assistance in developing a holistic strategic plan was whole heartedly embraced by the Tangaroa staff, who were grateful for a fresh pair of eyes and an external perspective.
Pio Terei and the Deloitte team (led by Rebecca Wright and Leon Wijohn) did an outstanding job of 'Connecting our Communities'. Encouraging the young Maori students from James Cook High School to include the world of business and central corporate Auckland in their visions for the future. And emphasizing the need for Corporate Auckland to continue to connect with Auckland's future workforce and diverse communities.
Thanks also to Angus Fletcher for his passionate and compelling message highlighting the need for private sector engagement in the Auckland educational sector.
"This relationship aspect I think is absolutely key - but it's much more fundamental than schools or educational institutions simply perceiving business in a sponsorship role. Business people bring not only a different perspective to school leadership learning but an objectivity and capability to think strategically about issues and opportunities. "
