Career Ready
The Career Ready Programme has been discontinued, however the Committee is happy to discuss hosting a particular day alongside you.
‘Career Ready’ is a work exposure programme designed to create opportunities for students, from low decile schools, to experience a variety of professional careers and learn about the skill sets required in a range of professional sectors. The programme is designed to land key messages around subject choices and career planning for a successful future.
‘Career Ready’ aligns with the Committee for Auckland’s work strategy, “to encourage talent and knowledge by promoting social advancement programmes which provide positive outcomes for Auckland's lower socio economic communities. It is available to students from nominated decile 1 South Auckland Secondary Schools.
The programme involves Committee for Auckland corporate members that can showcase six careers or more and illustrate how these careers interweave to produce the desired output. It has a strong focus on companies that are engineering or science based where future job opportunities are forecasted.

The demand for a post school qualification has increased dramatically over the last 20 years and has prompted universities to play a larger role in the school career interface. This has led to a reduction in the Business to School interface. For students to be career ready they must be able to learn continuously, be capable of a post school qualification and have a perspective about where that qualification may take them in society.
Business, as an expert in its field, is best equipped to provide knowledge about career opportunities and pathways. Many years ago the cadet programme, which took school leavers and trained them directly in a variety of industries, was run by large established companies. It was very successful and gave school students a small portal into the world of business and life after school. It is this portal into a variety of professions that we seek to provide with our Career Ready Programme.
At Career Ready days, CEO/senior managers from different companies speak to the students to convey some really key messages such as “We need you and we want you!”
The Beca Story: To highlight the professional pathway into Engineering, Beca chose to focus on earlier intervention (year 9 and 10) to highlight the importance of retaining maths and sciences subjects.
The Westpac Story: To increase the diversity in their workplace Westpac directed their programme at years 12/13 to attract Pacific and Maori students into their summer work placement, part-time programmes. Westpac discussed the bank as a great career option due to study fees packages and placement in their graduate programme.
The Career Ready Day includes:
- Career presentations from junior graduate employees
- Construction or design activity related to business outputs
- Message from the CEO, “We need you!”
- Site visit that showcases business output
- Career pathway discussions

Career Ready Days
2013
Saatchi & Saatchi
Committee for Auckland member, Saatchi & Saatchi, hosted a cohort of students from Mangere College, Otahuhu College, Tamaki College and Tangaroa College for a Career Ready Day on 13 June. Students experienced what it’s like to work at a creative agency, the various careers available, and what they need to do to succeed in an advertising agency such as Saatchi & Saatchi.
Auckland International Airport
Students from Aorere, De La Salle, James Cook High School and McAuley High School were hosted by Committee for Auckland member, Auckland International Airport Limited. Career presentations from Operations, Customs, Airport Security, Hospitality and Human Resources informed the students of the wide range of employment opportunities available in a large corporate. The Airport has over 22,000 staff covering around 100 businesses. Employment options at the “gateway to New Zealand” are plenty and the insights shared with the students were invaluable.
Bank of New Zealand
Hosted by the Maori Business Team at Bank of New Zealand (BNZ), 40 high achieving business students from Aorere College, De La Salle College, Tangaroa College and Tamaki College attended the first Career Ready Day for 2013. It was encouraging to see the students engaging with senior BNZ staff and the dialogue was rich. BNZ was a fantastic host and the insights shared resonated with everyone. A key highlight for the students was the opportunity to converse with Andrew Thorburn, Managing Director and CEO, BNZ whose speech drove home the importance of education, tertiary qualifications and hard work.
